Agrarian Sumy Region – 2016

32
The lion’s share of the population of the Sumy region works in the agricultural sector; as before, the countryside feeds us with milk, meat, and bread.

Our lands produce the highest yields in Ukraine. The lives of agricultural workers are moving to a new, more high-tech level. However, alongside this, many problems arise that complicate the lives of farmers.

What was grown

In the crop production sector, the harvest of the main agricultural crops has already been completed, except for grain corn. As of early November, 2.239 million tons of grain and leguminous crops had been harvested, according to the press service of the Regional State Administration. The average yield in the Sumy region is 49.5 c/ha, while across Ukraine this figure is lower—43.9 c/ha. The leaders in this regard are agricultural enterprises of the Romny (61.9 c/ha), Lebedyn (60.4 c/ha), Buryn (59.3 c/ha), and Trostianets (59.1 c/ha) districts.

In 2016, our region became the leader in buckwheat cultivation and production among the regions of Ukraine. Our farmers managed to harvest 25.7 thousand tons, which is 1.9 thousand tons more than last year. The average buckwheat yield in the region amounted to 12.3 c/ha.

As for grain corn, Sumy region ranked second in Ukraine. A total of 1.013 million tons was harvested with an average yield of 83.1 c/ha (Ukraine average—60.1 c/ha). The regional leaders are farms of the Krolevets (98 c/ha), Bilopillia (95 c/ha), Putyvl (94 c/ha), Romny (94 c/ha), and Konotop (93.5 c/ha) districts.

This year, farmers of the Sumy region managed to increase the harvested sunflower crop to 477 thousand tons; its average yield is higher than the national average: in the region—24.7 c/ha, in the country—22.3 c/ha.

According to preliminary estimates, the region expects to harvest 3.5 million tons of grain, including wheat—972 thousand tons and rye—19 thousand tons. We can be confident in our food security. The region’s need for food grain is only 157 thousand tons.

What was raised

As for livestock farming in the Sumy region, our farmers increased livestock numbers and actively undertook modernization of milking parlors and the introduction of new technologies for raising cattle and poultry. Among the regions of Ukraine, the Sumy region ranks 4th in the number of dairy cows, 7th in the number of cattle, and in gross milk production.

As of early November, the cattle population in the region amounted to 154.4 thousand head, which is 7.5 thousand more than last year. The number of pigs reached 141.3 thousand head (up by 1.8 thousand), sheep and goats—43.3 thousand head (up by 5.6 thousand), poultry—6.5 million head (up by 1.4 million). Milk production in the region amounted to 353.6 thousand tons, eggs—350.6 million units. Notably, milk from Sumy cows is used for the production of baby food.

Money into the countryside

Agricultural enterprises operating in the region this year allocated 31.8 million UAH for the development of rural infrastructure. Part of the financial assistance to rural communities was directed toward the construction or reconstruction of social infrastructure facilities.

“Agrarian” statistics:

The amount of rent for land shares based on the monetary valuation of land has increased since the beginning of the year from 4.2% to 5.8%.

The flow of investment into the agricultural sector of the Sumy region is steadily growing.

Over 10 months of 2016, more than 1 billion UAH in investments were attracted to the development of the region’s agro-industrial complex.
