This year, farmers of the Sumy region harvested the largest grain crop in the entire history of the region.
According to Yurii Kostiuk, Deputy Director of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of the Regional State Administration, 3.33 million tons of grain have already been harvested. However, work on some fields is still ongoing, so the final result is not yet known. Farmers in the region plan to harvest 3.6 million tons of grain, which would be a record—last year such a figure seemed almost unrealistic.
The average yield across the region is 56.7 centners per hectare, which is 10.5 centners per hectare higher than in 2013. This indicator has also become another achievement for the Sumy region in the agricultural sector, as it secured 5th place in Ukraine in terms of grain yields. The prerequisites for such success appeared as early as this summer, when the region ranked first in the country in winter wheat yields.
