October 5: what happened in Sumy and the Sumy region on Sunday

War with Russia

During the day, from the morning of October 4 to the morning of October 5, 2025, Russian troops carried out 187 shelling attacks on 36 settlements in 18 territorial communities of the region. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Sumy, Shostka, and Konotop districts.

The enemy carried out up to 10 guided aerial bomb (KAB) strikes, nearly 20 VOG grenade drops from UAVs, more than 20 UAV strikes, and also conducted attacks with FPV drones and multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) on the territory of Sumy region.

As a result of Russian shelling of the region, there are fatalities and injuries among civilians:

In the Shostka community, a 71-year-old man was killed as a result of a UAV attack. Women aged 52 and 61, a 44-year-old woman, three children (her sons) aged 14, 11, and 7, as well as men aged 48, 65, and 54 were injured;
In the Seredyna-Buda community, a 63-year-old man was killed by an FPV drone strike. A 65-year-old man was injured;
In the Krasnopillia community, an 88-year-old man was injured as a result of KAB strikes.

Objects of civilian infrastructure were damaged or destroyed:

in the Krasnopillia community, civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed, a warehouse and 11 private households were damaged;
in the Seredyna-Buda community, a boat was damaged;
in the Shostka community, civilian infrastructure facilities, railway infrastructure, non-residential premises, a multi-apartment residential building, and a vehicle were damaged;
in the Putyvl community, a multi-storey building was damaged;
in the Buryn community, a building of an educational institution was damaged;
in the Vorozhba community, a tractor was damaged;
in the Hlukhiv community, a private household was destroyed;
in the Sumy community, a private house and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged.

Grim statistics of the war:

About 2,000 energy facilities in Sumy region have been damaged by Russian shelling since the beginning of the full-scale war.

The Shostka community remains without electricity. Points of Invincibility are operating in the city. Water is supplied according to a schedule. Free hot meals have also been organized for children.

Due to damage to the gas distribution station and energy facilities, there is also no gas supply in the city, and mobile communication is unstable. Gas supply is being restored in Shostka!

On October 5, in the Buryn community, a school was damaged as a result of a UAV attack using a “Molniya” drone. Also, as a result of FPV drone strikes in the Novoslobidska community, a private house burned down, and in the Putyvl community, a private building sustained minor damage.

Also on Sunday, Shalyhyne, Kucherivka, Fotovyzh, and Bobylivka in Sumy region were affected by fire from Russian artillery.

Holidays

October 5 is the Day of the Territorial Defense of Ukraine. Today we honor those who stood up to defend their community and native land by joining the ranks of the Territorial Defense Forces. Territorial defense has become a school of courage for thousands of Ukrainians. It was they who, leaving peaceful life behind, defended their cities and villages, and later — the entire country.

Also on October 5, Sumy and Sumy region, together with all of Ukraine, celebrate Teachers’ Day. We congratulate all teachers, lecturers, and education sector workers on their professional holiday!

Good news: teachers in Sumy region will receive an additional 4,000 added to their salaries. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yuliia Svyrydenko. Teachers in frontline areas, in particular, will begin receiving the additional payment in October — including for September.
