Children’s celebration in the center of Sumy (photos)

On June 1, a charity festival of Ukrainian art was held in the park near the Shevchenko monument to mark International Children’s Day.

From 10 a.m., a concert program of the festival “A Song Unites Hearts” began near the Sumy Palace of Children and Youth, featuring teachers and students from more than twenty schools in Sumy and the district.

“The goal of our event was to introduce children to songs that stood at the origins of Ukrainian culture, and also so that children could hear the songs on which our generation was raised,” comments Halyna Plakhotkina, director of the Information and Methodological Center.

Various creative and entertainment zones were set up at the festival venue, where children had the opportunity to create a motanka doll with their own hands or paint a picture under the supervision of instructors. At the same time, chess tournaments were held for everyone interested.

“Chess is a very promising activity. I would really like interest in this intellectual sport to grow in our city,” comments Alla Synytsyna, president of the Sumy Regional Chess Federation.

During the event, funds were collected for the treatment of children in the hematology department of the Sumy Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital. Within two hours from the start, more than two and a half thousand hryvnias were collected from caring guests of the “A Song Unites Hearts” festival.
