Life and Culture

Sumy is an amazing city. From the very first day of the war with Russia, despair has never taken hold of our city. Cultural life has never stopped either. Some residents of Sumy, primarily women, were forced to leave the city in search of safety and peace in order to protect their children and grandchildren. After some time, many of them returned to Sumy. However, most people never left the city. For Sumy residents, their city is a native, familiar, and close living environment. It is precisely here that such masterpieces can be born—like those presented today to the public in the city gallery. On March 21, an exhibition titled “Silk Infinity of Colors” by participants of the “Batik” studio under the guidance of Tetiana Surkova opened in the right hall of the gallery, while the left hall hosted the artistic photography exhibition “She Has Visited” by the well-known photo artist Serhii Maliuk.

Opening the batik exhibition, a gallery representative aptly noted that “when you look at these works, your soul feels lighter.” One of the studio participants, artist Alona Myuling, continued this thought by admitting that “batik supports emotional balance; it distracts, inspires, and helps one to live.” Another artist, Liubov Korovai, shared something deeply personal—how the idea for a new work is born in her soul. An idea may come suddenly and captivate the artist so completely that she immediately rushes to the studio, passing kitchen duties on to her husband. A third exhibition participant, Yana Mazurenko, presented a work created two days before the start of the war: four cranes strive to break free from the tenacious grip of an ominous darkness closing in on the light from all sides. Impressive!

We recommend Sumy residents to visit these wonderful exhibitions. We assure you that you will receive a precious boost of positive energy. And who knows—you may even feel inspired to pick up brushes, paints, or a camera yourself and start creating. Art is a spiritual armor that protects our spirit and soul from despair and disappointment, filling them with light, love, and faith.
