September 21: what happened in Sumy and the Sumy region on Sunday
War with Russia
During the day, from the morning of September 20 to the morning of September 21, 2025, Russian troops carried out 69 shelling attacks on 26 settlements in 16 territorial communities of the region. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Sumy and Shostka districts.
The enemy used up to 40 guided aerial bombs (KABs), up to 10 UAV strikes, and carried out FPV drone strikes, MLRS attacks, and VOG grenade drops from UAVs on the territory of the Sumy region.
In the Sumy community, a 62-year-old man was injured as a result of hostile actions.
Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged:
- in the Sumy community, civilian infrastructure facilities and non-residential buildings were damaged;
- in the Vorozhba community, road infrastructure and a private household were damaged;
- in the Velyka Pysarivka community, a private house was damaged;
- in the Richky community, non-residential buildings were damaged.
- During the night, Russian “Shahed” drones hit warehouse facilities in the Zarichnyi district of Sumy. As a result of the strikes, a fire broke out.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire; there were no casualties.
On the morning of September 21, an enemy drone struck a civilian vehicle in a village of the Shalyhyne community. A 63-year-old driver was injured. He was taken to hospital with injuries, and medics are providing the necessary assistance.
Situation on the border with the Russian Federation
The situation on the front line in the Sumy direction on September 20:
The enemy made no progress in advances or assault operations. In the North Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, there were four enemy attacks today, which were repelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the General Staff reported.
Enemy troops are present in the following communities:
- Khotin community: Volodymyrivka, Novomykolaivka, Oleksiivka, Vodolahy, Zhuravka, Kostiantynivka, Bilovody;
- Yunakivka community: Yablunivka, Varachyne, Basivka, Yunakivka, Loknia.
In the occupied village of Oleksiivka in the Sumy region, fighters of the 225th Regiment are installing Ukrainian flags, the Separate Assault Regiment 225 reported. Nearby are two villages of the Khotin community — Kindrativka and Andriivka — which were liberated by the Defense Forces in the spring and summer of 2025. Kindrativka was liberated by the 225th Separate Assault Regiment.
As of 22:00 on September 21, in the North Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Ukrainian defenders repelled six attacks by Russian forces. The occupiers carried out 12 air strikes, dropped 31 guided aerial bombs, and conducted 143 shelling attacks, including 11 from MLRS.
Evacuation
Over the course of the day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organizations, evacuated 1 person from border communities.
