September 16: what was happening in Sumy and the Sumy region on Tuesday

War with Russia

During the day, from the morning of September 15 to the morning of September 16, 2025, Russian troops carried out 97 shelling attacks on 51 settlements in 17 territorial communities of the region. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Sumy and Shostka districts.

The enemy used more than 10 guided aerial bomb (KAB) strikes, more than 10 VOG grenade drops from UAVs, and carried out FPV drone and UAV strikes on the territory of the Sumy region.

As a result of Russian shelling of the region, civilians were injured:

• In the Trostianets community, as a result of an enemy attack, a 75-year-old woman and men aged 40 and 51 were injured. Later, two more people sought medical assistance — a 16-year-old boy and a 30-year-old woman. A 12-year-old boy was treated on site;
• In the Yunakivka community, a 69-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman were injured as a result of an FPV drone strike on a car;
• In the Sumy community, a 29-year-old woman was injured by debris while one of the enemy UAVs was being shot down.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged or destroyed:

• in the Sumy community, a civilian infrastructure facility and non-residential buildings were damaged;
• in the Bilopillia community, a private house and a civilian car were damaged;
• in the Myropillia community, an excavator was damaged;
• in the Vorozhba community, non-residential buildings and property of a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
• in the Druzhba community, damage was recorded in the private sector;
• in the Seredyna-Buda community, a private house was destroyed;
• in the Trostianets community, a civilian infrastructure facility, apartment buildings, non-residential buildings, and cars were damaged.

On September 16, the enemy carried out a massive strike on the outskirts of the Sumy community using strike UAVs. At least six impacts were recorded in the Zarichnyi district of the city of Sumy. Preliminary reports indicate no casualties.

Situation on the border with the Russian Federation

The situation on the front line in the Sumy direction on September 15:

The Defense Forces of Ukraine achieved successes in the area of Kindrativka and Oleksiivka of the Khotin community, as well as Yablunivka of the Yunakivka community.

Meanwhile, the enemy continued offensive actions east of Sadky of the Yunakivka community. Enemy troops are present in the following communities:

• Khotin community: Volodymyrivka, Novomykolaivka, Oleksiivka, Vodolahy, Kostiantynivka, and Bilovody;
• Yunakivka community: Yablunivka, Varachyne, Basivka, Yunakivka, Loknia, and Sadky.

Evacuation

Over the course of the day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organizations, evacuated 59 people from border communities.

Traitor

A 42-year-old resident of Sumy collected information on the locations of Ukrainian Armed Forces units in the Sumy region, the movement of military equipment, as well as its quantity and direction of movement. He also gathered coordinates of energy infrastructure facilities and transmitted this information to officers of the Russian FSB. He was found guilty of high treason and sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Healthcare

Over the course of the week, doctors from the Fortitude mobile clinic provided free medical assistance to 354 local residents of the Trostianets community in the Okhtyrka district. In addition to consultations and examinations, patients were able to undergo additional tests directly in the mobile clinic, such as blood tests and electrocardiograms. All Fortitude patients received free medicines and eyeglasses in accordance with medical prescriptions.
