August 29: how the workweek ended in Sumy and the Sumy region
Over the course of the day, from the morning of August 28 to the morning of August 29, 2025, Russian troops carried out 136 shelling attacks on 39 settlements in 16 territorial communities of the region. The highest number of attacks was recorded in the Sumy and Shostka districts.
The enemy carried out more than 30 guided aerial bomb (KAB) strikes, more than 10 UAV strikes, as well as missile strikes, FPV drone attacks, and VOG grenade drops from UAVs on the territory of Sumy region.
As a result of Russian shelling of the region, civilians were injured:
- In the Bilopillia community, a woman born in 1956 was injured as a result of an enemy UAV strike.
- In the Pishchanske district of the Sumy community, a woman born in 1967 was also injured due to a UAV attack.
Objects of civilian infrastructure were damaged or destroyed:
- in the Bilopillia community, a civilian infrastructure facility and a passenger car were damaged;
- in the Hlukhiv community, civilian infrastructure facilities and non-residential premises were damaged;
- in the Sumy community, a passenger car and a private house were damaged;
- in the Vorozhba community, non-residential premises were damaged;
- in the Novoslobidska community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.
On the morning of August 29, Russian drones struck a milk tanker truck and a passenger car in two villages of the Novoslobidska community. Fortunately, no people were injured.
Also today, on Friday, after 10 a.m., Russian aviation struck one of the border villages of the Znob-Novhorodske community with four guided aerial bombs (KABs). A 57-year-old woman was injured. Her leg was partially torn off. Doctors are fighting for her life.
Situation on the border with the Russian Federation
The situation on the front line in the Sumy direction on August 28:
The enemy made no progress in advances or assault operations. Enemy troops are present in the following communities:
- Khotin community: Novomykolaivka, Oleksiivka, Kindrativka, Kostiantynivka, Bilovody, Stepne;
- Yunakivka community: Yablunivka, Varachyne, Yunakivka, Sadky;
- Krasnopillia community: Mariine.
“They f***ed us up, we’re burning here…” — a laconic report from the occupiers’ positions in the Sumy direction. The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to effectively shape the situation, ensuring a stable “temperature regime” for the occupiers.
At night, SBS units struck a linear production station in Russia’s Bryansk region. This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The station pumps diesel fuel through main oil product pipelines, including for the needs of Russian troops. The facility’s pumping capacity is about 10.5 million tons per year.
According to information from Sumy border guards, in the North Slobozhanshchyna direction, Russian vehicles, dugouts, shelters, mortars, and other positions of Russian troops were destroyed.
Evacuation
Over the past day, local authorities together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and public organizations evacuated two people from border communities.
Day of Remembrance
On August 29, Ukraine honors the memory of all our fallen warriors—defenders of our state who died in battles for our country, for an independent Ukraine. On this day, we recall the tragic events of August 2014 near Ilovaisk. At that time, hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers, leaving encirclement via the so-called “green corridor,” were treacherously shot by the Russian army. Tragically, 366 of our defenders were killed.
Since 2022, Ukrainians have been defending themselves in a full-scale war. This is an extraordinarily long and difficult path of courage. And we do not forget thanks to whom Ukraine endures.
Eternal glory to all who stood up to defend Ukraine! Eternal memory to everyone who died fighting for Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!
Day of Mourning
Sumy region is in mourning for those killed in Kyiv. Twenty-three people were killed by Russian troops during a massive attack on the capital on the night of August 28.
Emergency Incident
An unexploded Russian strike UAV was discovered in Sumy near an energy facility. Explosive experts and National Police officers arrived at the scene and removed and neutralized the enemy drone. Such UAVs, if detonated, could leave residents of Sumy region without electricity.
