education that leads to success
Sumy State Pedagogical University (SSPU) named after A. S. Makarenko is considered the founder of higher education in the Sumy region. The history of SSPU began in December 1924, when higher pedagogical courses were opened in Sumy to develop education. In 1933, the educational institution was reorganized into the Sumy State Pedagogical Institute, which in 1957, for significant achievements in educational activities, was named after the outstanding educator Anton Semenovych Makarenko. In October 1999, the Sumy State Pedagogical Institute rose to a higher level in the education system: by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A. S. Makarenko was established on its basis.
Today, SSPU named after A. S. Makarenko is a modern higher education institution of the IV accreditation level, one of the leading educational, scientific-methodological, and cultural centers of the Sumy region and Slobozhanshchyna. Achievements in training highly qualified teaching staff have been marked by numerous awards: in 2004, SSPU received a laureate diploma of the ranking of higher educational institutions of Ukraine “Sophia of Kyiv”; in 2009, it was recognized as one of the winners of the International Academic Quality Rating “Golden Fortune”; and in 2011, it was recognized as one of the best universities within the All-Ukrainian project “Golden Fund of the Nation.”
The university consists of three institutes (Pedagogy and Psychology, Physical Culture, Philology), four faculties (Physics and Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Geography, History, and the Faculty of Arts), 40 departments, and three study centers in Lebedyn, Shostka, and Putyvl. About seven thousand students study at the university in full-time, part-time, and external forms of education across 68 fields of training and specialties. All pedagogical specialties are dual, which gives graduates significant advantages in the labor market. Graduates of SSPU—masters of education management, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, arts, and philology—today form a powerful personnel potential of higher education institutions in the Sumy region.
Students are taught and mentored by a team of qualified lecturers, including 29 doctors of sciences and professors, 230 candidates of sciences and associate professors, 2 academicians, 12 honored workers of education, physical culture, and sports, 13 honored coaches of Ukraine, and 7 honored artists, masters of folk art, and artists.
The material and technical base of SSPU has a modern structure: 5 educational and laboratory buildings, 3 dormitories, a sports complex, 5 museums, a stadium, a botanical garden, and a biological base. A particular pride is the university library, which holds more than 1 million publications. For the Sumy region, this is a unique figure.
But most importantly, SSPU fully corresponds to the status of a higher education institution in which, alongside fundamental scientific and professional-applied training of specialists, the formation of the intellectual elite takes place—personalities with a broad worldview. The university has postgraduate studies in 10 scientific specialties, a specialized Academic Council for the defense of PhD dissertations operates, and master’s training is conducted in 18 specialties.
Thus, SSPU named after A. S. Makarenko quite deservedly claims the role of the leading pedagogical institution of the Sumy region. Moreover, the university is an innovative-type educational institution and strives to keep pace with global trends in education development.
